this is a piece/ project I'm working on partly for my portfolio and just to practice the process(I'm kind of wondering whether it would be better to have this in the sketchbook section instead but it is meant to be a concept art piece/ project).
As the titles says she's a female lancer, 20's, wields a lance/ elongated spear/ pike/ halberd type weapon.
i started by making some general moodboards to kind of follow in regards to her character look, weapon use and environment. though this stuff may change somewhat depending on feedback and whether a design crops up that doesn't quite reflect the moodboard but looks quite good.
i think the main thing to note is that i kept it quite open, not stating what region/ culture she would be from and left it open as to experiment a little with several possibilities for the design.
here's the character moodboard
the environment moodboard
the weapon moodboard
from there i made some silhouettes, some were freehand, some i blacked out some reference photos i had(don't worry i believe they are royalty free) and drew on top in order to get silhouettes to see if that would help me and others see the figure better and quicker. if you are wondering why some have detailed weapons and others have just sticks, it was mainly because i realised after some of the first silhouettes i did that the weapon and what it looked like would likely reflect the attire and so i didn't see much point in blocking them all out individually until that was more set in stone.
i also did some thumbnail designs, i found it a little harder to do properly as i couldn't just fill in space quickly and had the think about the shapes and details a more.
as usual feedback is welcome and appreciated.
it is also on the conceptart.org forum if you feel more comfortable chiming in on that forum, or want to see what they are saying if anything.

Nice reference as well.
Looking forward to seeing more of it.
and some head sketches to decide on facial features and hairstyles, perhaps someone would think a certain hairstyle would look better on one of the different heads.
as usual feedback is welcome and appreciated.
and it's also on conceptart

so these are the values for the character to take to the colour stage. if you feel i should do more of one or perhaps do values for another one of the skteches feel free to say.
also did some weapon sketches, I'm not too sure on the best process for weapon designing, so the process I'll be using for now is using these sketches as a base, and then from here, doing values and maybe pattern details with tweaks on the better/more popular one's before finalizing the weapon.
though some stages of the weapon are still somewhat dependent on the character look in the end i guess.
thanks for the reply. i decided to look at 9's silhouettes and do a couple of sketches and values
I did a bunch of colour schemes from a number of the values.
personally i think lines B and D are showing the most promise in terms of colour schemes I'm liking, particularly 1, 3 and 5 on B and 2, 3 and 5 on D.
though a4, c2 and 5 H2, I1 and K2 individually from other lines as well.
also desaturated them to see how the values changed if at all
i also decided to categorize them by colour influences. which was mostly done by typing in, armour and clothing older times and fantasy once or twice.
as always comments critiques, what you like or don't is always welcome.
these were the one's that stood out to me as well, particularly the first 3 and 6.
maybe C5 and I1 from the colour scheme page as well maybe but I'm not too sure.
