Skinning a model with separate meshes for clothing

Hello,

I am learning about skinning now. I am working on a model where the clothes are separate meshes with quite different topology. So far it has been all kinds of headaches. What works in one pose doesn't work in another.

Whar approach is typically used in the industry for handling this.

Should I retopologize the clothes to closely resemble the character topo?
Should I make separate models with the clothes attached as one mesh?
Something different?

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.
