Played Stronghold? Similar to AOE in some ways, but you'd really have to play it to see if you like it or not. Haven't played any of the newer ones myself, speaking mostly about Stronghold: Crusader.
Really nothing compares to it imo. I feel Stronghold and AoE are much different from one another (both top games though) I guess Dawn of Modern World might be closest I've found. Which is also an extremely fun lan game.
