Trying to get better at handpainting

I've been lurking for a while now and at times I have been completely astonished by what people post here, handpainted stuff in particular.. I've been trying to handpaint myself, but I just feel it isn't going that well :poly122:.

Crits, tips or tutorials are much appreciated!

Looks good just tweak hue/sat and contrast and it will be perfect.

I used the saturation slider, played with variations, and then I changed the curves and got this

Maybe its a little too saturated now.Im not sure.

I don't do hand painted stuff, but what I noticed on nice hand painted stuff, the highlights and shadows are pushed more. Keep in mind, usually you don't use normal maps in handpainted textures, so your shadows and edge highlights need to be done manually.

Download VERTEX Vol.1 from here http://www.artbypapercut.com/ The article about hand painting is a true jewel (among many other stuff)
As a side note: I cant wait the release of Vol.2
