Landscapes giving me a crashy time, help appreciated

Hey everyone, I've been fighting with this issue for a couple of days now and would very much appreciate any advice you might have!

I have a pretty large and intense scene with a 4033x4033 size landscape. When using the landscape tools, either for sculpting or texture painting, UDK gets very, very prone to crashing. It seems pretty random too, sometimes it crashes as soon as I enter Landscape mode and other times I can paint for several minutes before it crashes. What I've managed to figure out so far is
  • My computer tempurature is within normal ranges, so it's probably not overheating
  • At the time of crashing UDK only uses around 1GB of RAM, so it doesn't feel like memory is the issue either
  • I'm not able to reproduce this in any other scene, so it probably IS memory anyway but I don't know :/

My hardware is as follows
Operating System
			Windows 8 Pro 64-bit
		CPU
			Intel Core i7 2600 @ 3.40GHz	49 °C
			Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
		RAM
			8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 671MHz (9-9-9-24)
		Motherboard
			ASUSTeK Computer INC. P8Z68-V LE (LGA1155)	39 °C
		Graphics
			BenQG2222HDL (1920x1080@60Hz)
			Cintiq 24HD (1920x1200@60Hz)
			1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series (Sapphire/PCPartner)	58 °C
		Hard Drives
			466GB SAMSUNG HD501LJ (SATA)	48 °C
			149GB SAMSUNG HD161HJ (SATA)	48 °C
			2795GB Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 (SATA)	49 °C
		Optical Drives
			No optical disk drives detected
		Audio
			Realtek High Definition Audio

Any advice on what I could try next would be greatly appreciated!

Sometimes, I feel like it's the auto-saving that fuzzes things up. There have been several times for me when the auto-saving crashes UDK.

But yeah I don't really have any proper answers, UDK crashes a lot for me as well. Maybe ask yourself if you really need a scene that big. That might also be the reason it crashes, update your drivers as well. You never know ^^
