Hello ladies and gents! I thought it would be fun to take one of my old illustrations and make it into the 3D. I've only had a couple days to work on it so far, but I'd really appreciate any feedback you might have.
I'd like to maintain the overall look of my concept, however, I'm totally open to suggestions and changes in the creature's design to make it more believable or interesting. Thank you in advance!
Here's the concept:
This is the block in so far:

I know in the hangout you were saying that you thought most of the colors in your painting were from the lighting and not his actual skin. Even if that is true I think his color structure is a lot more believable, and natural looking. I like the warm tones in his face and how they gradient into the cool in his body, but then you just have little hints of those warm tones around his elbow.
Just my thoughts. Either way I think he looks kick ass.
Looking forward to the next update!
I'll be looking forward to seeing this set up with flowers and what not as well.
Personally, I think a middle ground between 1 and 2 would work best.
I'll have an update with Rumble Bee's final texture/color scheme soon! Thanks again and as always, crits and comments welcome!
I think you could push this harder in terms of your composition though. I think there needs to be more depth to the shot. I hope you do not think it to forward of me but I did a quick paintover to give an idea of what I mean.
Right now you have fore and mid ground but nothing in back really which is really flattening everything out. I pushed Mr. Bee down into the flowers more and tilted him (I think you could also rotate him to face the camera a bit more so he's less full on profile.) a bit and added some more flowers in the back to give some depth and frame him. Just my 2 cents though. Loving the way this is coming along so far. You've been a s busy as a... Bee?
Keep up the good work, will keep an close eye to this thread
This wasn't the shot I was originally going for, but I kind of like it, so I think I'll find a way to make this and the other shot work. Comments and crits welcome as always, thanks!
Just my 2 cents regarding rendering, feels like there's too much contrast in the saturation.
Did some paintovers for giving the render more tone - just used hue colorizer with 20% opacity, and bit of vignette to pop things out.
@ Chai: I agree 100%, it's funny because I did exactly that; but I definitely need to push it a bit more so things feel more cohesive. I'm also debating turning those flowers to more of a pink instead of such a bright red. Thanks man, good eye!
he might benefit from a bit of a stronger rim light for the horn area, especially with the leaf behind, I cant help but look at where the two are touching as its edge on edge
Ello, ello! Made some revisions per the feedback you all gave. Here's a breakdown of the things I added/took away:
- More vignette
- Hue shifting
- Rim light for the horn
- Removed leaf that was creating tangent near the horn
Revision of the revision below...
Some fake SSS, or just painting a bit of reds in the crevices would probably make it look a bit more organic.
But check the attachment to see what I meant.
