not bad at all for a first try.
two points:
- paint in edge highlights along your corners, will make those polys look smoother.
- add in more color variation, possibly reflected color from the ground, and discoloration on the wood.
with hand painting there is so much you can do it's almost mind blowing!
here's a sword i did a few weeks ago
see the handle? that goldish part? the one attaching the handle and the blade together. that's a flat image yet it doesn't look like it through the use of lighting.
I still feel like there could be more colors in this! Maybe add some blues and possibly greens to the metals. Not a lot, just some subtle variation. Maybe some deep burgandies for your lowlights in the wood? What you have is good, but I think it could be better!
When painting by hand I would always include gradients in your colors. It helps break up the shapes a bit more and help exaggerate them. Also with metals its good to possibly have some sharper highlights, if you want that polished look. Right now all your materials have the same finish to them, the wood looks just as reflective as the metal, try to make each type of material stand out a bit more. It will really make your hand painted work much better.
Have a basic gradient run trough your base colors, it helps pop your shapes out.Depending on the style you are going for you can have this be stronger or weaker but I prefer to always include it.
