Looks like they're truly approaching this "for the fans" at every level of development. I hope it works out! I would love to see more development go this route.
Looked cool. I'm not a huge fan of the free labor contests, but I'll hold off until more info is released. I did like that you could sell pieces to other players though.
Can someone post a link to the video of the giant golem looking thing smashing that building? I can only find the GIF used as the header for the Kotaku article.
Im sort of curious of the impact Voxels might have on game design if they catch on. Especially environmental (I don't see character design having a huge change)
Looks interesting, but nothing in the reveal really screamed EverQuest to me. Would have liked to see some familiar locales or some combat that didn't look like an action rpg.
This looks incredible. Faster paced action with active movement/dodging/aiming, fully destructible environments, the ability to summon walls from the ground and build your defenses that will actually persist beyond the battle, a leveling system that works more like AAs than actual levels, AI that thinks on its own based on its surroundings. And best of all, it comes from a company who actually knows what it'll take to pull all of this off!
I AM SO EXCITED!
Though I am curious, I missed the livestream and can't seem to find it anywhere. Is it available for watching?

I'm mostly excited about the player studio part. But do they mean regular 3d asset creation with zbrush/maya etc., or just those in-game made, minecraft type of environment "assets"? Cause that would blow :>

I'm not sure, but it looked like in-game assets + tools.

Both. SoE came to my school not too long ago and gave a talk. They were literally BEGGING us to go into their store and make things. Items, armor, accessories, whatever. They were even talking about getting character animations in there. Now, what they were referring to was EQ and EQ2, but I can't imagine them not carrying over.
They've been practicing on their older games a whole bunch of REALLY neat little toys like SoE-mote. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG6GK6Oo58c"]EverQuest II: Facial Recognition and Voice Modulation - SOE-mote - YouTube[/ame]
Umm, that does sound too promising... I'm not sure they can accomplish everything as they are saying. If they do, that would be awesome. I just can't see updates on the world as easy as they are saying they would.
Or is just me, looking at the way the guy is presenting it.
All of this looks pretty cool. However, almost none of it reminds of Everquest in any sort of way.
I was really big into the original EQ. I'll probably have to pretend that Everquest Next is a totally new franchise, if I am to enjoy it at all. I doubt the things that made EQ good will be implemented in new MMOs any time soon (i.e. a decent level of challenge, large 'shared' dungeon zones etc).
2) They are opening it up for community interaction and development, with user generated content playing a big role.
These are still fairly new to the gaming world. So this, if done right, can help open up a whole new frontier for the way games are made and the user's future expectations.

I'm worried about the same. I need corpse runs. I need expensive buffs that are worth announcing to the world. I need ranger gating... wait. No I don't.
They've mentioned a "hardcore" server mode somewhere around-abouts, and I'm hoping that they'll make normal servers for the people who like WoW and the like, and then the hardcore will be for those of us who want the original EQ back again.
Does anyone know how long it takes before knowing if you got accepted to join beta?
If they don't reply right away does that mean you are SoL?
Nah. Most beta's have a long time between sign-ups and acceptance. As far as I know, EQN's beta hasn't started yet and won't be for a good little while yet, so expect your reply once they actually get things started.
edit: And even if I'm misunderstanding and the beta HAS started, you're looking at a few days minimum before you get an acceptance from most companies.
I really liked everything but this.
It just feels like an obvious cover up xD It'd be great if it was this dynamic though but I don't know xD No proof of it yet.

It's the classic old trick of hiding the removal of chunks with a big explosion as while it's dynamic it wouldn't look good without the puff of smoke hiding it :P
Both terrain and buildings seems to be built up by voxels with some really nice dynamic tiling to make it seamless.
Of course it is dynamic, almost everything apart from trees and some assets seems to be made of voxels.
By the way, they are using Voxel Farm Engine made by just one guy. This thing is just bonkers.
Making the engine in your free time and then selling it to people making next Everquest... Damn.
So I didnt write since I posted the original link. Buuut, holy fucking hell, that looks amazing! The destruction. The multi-layers. The building tools. I hope to hell the player housing uses the same tools so we can build our own houses. All the giant public quests that will change the world forever. the parkour, although it looks buggy, it has potential.
After looking at it extensively I can say that I'm very excited and impressed by this. even though I was skeptical at first , it seems amazing to me. Exactly the way to go

I've only skimmed the article but those are some nice looking voxels

But this... this has me excited.
seems like a smart thing to do - TUG licensed it as well.
Really hope this works out. I loved playing EQ back in the day.

And presumably it was all a lead-up to Next.

Those super-opaque smoke particles really killed the combat though, couldn't see wtf was going on.
