Cryptic Studios - Ship Artist - Star Trek Online

Cryptic Studios is looking for a talented 3D Ship Artist to build the newest ships designed to boldly go where no one has gone before. For almost 50 years the starships of Star Trek have journeyed to strange new worlds and found their own place in the pantheon of popular culture as beloved characters in their own right. Do you dream of seeing your creations explore the stars? Do you have the perfect idea for Starfleet's latest starship or the Klingon Defense Force's newest iteration on the famed Bird-of-Prey? Is your ideal office located at Utopia Planitia?

If so, you don't need to wait until 2161 to apply to join the inaugural class at Starfleet Academy. Star Trek Online is looking for a ship artist to join the team at Cryptic Studios and help shape the future of Star Trek. Join us, and find your place in the galaxy.

You must have the ability to create aesthetically pleasing ship designs from scratch while adhering to polygon and other budget constraints. The role of Ship Artist at Cryptic requires an intermediate level technical proficiency (you don’t have to know a scripting language but it wouldn’t hurt). You must be detail oriented, organized and able to troubleshoot your own work.
Located in Northern California in Los Gatos, we offer the fun, focused and casual atmosphere of a small developer. We actively balance our work with the personal lives of our employees. At Cryptic, we only hire the best and most talented people who love the work, the genre and the game.

Every day you could be:
  • Working in a team environment, developing starships for the well established Star Trek Online MMO.
  • Collaborating with the design team to find new and interesting ways to create ships, combat and powers.
  • Using 3D Studio Max, Photoshop and proprietary software to create art.
What we'd like to see:
  • Experience using proprietary editors, software and tools
  • Skill at modeling assets with or without concepts and designs.
  • Ability to sketch ideas.
  • Good modeling techniques and practices.
  • Ability to work in a technical and highly organized environment.
  • Solid, efficient UV unwrapping and mapping skills.
  • The ability to create custom materials and all associated maps (diffuse, normal, spec, etc.) for new or existing assets.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work within a given schedule.
  • A strong portfolio, demo reel or web site that demonstrates high quality art renderings.
  • Photoshop and 3ds Max experience.
  • Ability to work within a style, including a style set by another artist.
  • 4-year degree is recommended.
