Hello!
I thought I'd try and get a bit more serious about my modelling and do something nice for a portfolio piece. It's based on
this concept.
Here's where I'm at so far. All just poly modelling so far. Critiques are definitely welcome, want to make sure I've got all the shapes about right before I start sculpting in the finer details.
Things yet to do:
attach the legs nicely, right now they're just sort of stuck on willy nilly, just wanted to see how it all looked together. The legs are also not all touching the ground plane, so they will have to be posed to do so.
Attach the smaller hair dryer thing to the body somehow. The concept isn't overly clear on this, it looks like there's a thin wire connecting it, but I'm not sure if there's something else. Suggestions on this would be appreciated.
Once I'm happy with it, bevel all my sharp edges so my normal maps aren't horrible, sculpt in all those little panel details and such. Perhaps some of it would have been better modelled, but I kind of wanted to try out this workflow to see how it goes. Then make a low poly and texture it!
I also want to make a small base/diorama to put it on but that will come after I've finished it (hopefully).
Things I'd like opinions on:
Making changes to the concept. I changed the joysticks quite dramatically from the concept because I didn't think they made any sense, should I change them back to be the same as the concept? I'm under the impression that it is important - especially for portfolio pieces - that the model matches as closely as possible.
I really dislike the way the foot rests attach to the base. It just looks so flimsy. Am I interpreting the concept incorrectly, if I'm not should I change it? Leave it as is?
Ok go!

Finished the low poly and the UV mapping. Took much longer than expecting.
Did a basic colour block-out. Diddled around in Marmoset for the first time. I decided to paint in the small details for the normal map by hand because I'm using blender and when I went to sculpt it it just sort of frowned at me and we both started crying. I'm guessing there's some neat way to do those sort of things that I'm unaware of.
Haven't baked the normal map just yet, will wait until I add in something on the leg I only just realised was missing when I was looking at the concept for the colours.
Here's some pictures:
The sticks also don't look like that could move at all. You need like a rubbery, don't know what they are called thing under it. Look it up. You will see what I mean.
This kind of got abandoned because my uni semester started up, but I've been working on it again. I'm pretty happy with how it's progressed! Texturing is almost done.
@Josh I changed the sticks to look more like other joysticks, I think they look much nicer now. I didn't want to stray too far from the concept, though, so I've not really added any more controls or anything. I think it looks a bit more complex with the normal maps and such, though.
Have at it.
You might also consider adding some bare metal areas around the joints where the paint has worn away.
