Character Improvement WIP-Critique requested

Hey all,

I'm doing a bit of work on my portfolio (I took down everything while I rewrite and make new pieces).

Heres a new piece I've been working on for the past couple of days and was hoping that I could get some helpful critique, primarily on material definition.

I'm going for a sort of sun bleached, post apocalyptic raider of sorts.

Thanks very much,

I'd suggest moving the overall values around a bit. Also sneaking some more saturated colors in for some accents can be really nice. I don't know if you've seen the design docs for dota 2, but I think they could be helpful for this.

He has an uncomfortable back arch in his back that is sticking his chest forward, it could be the length of the torso and the tightness of the armor around his stomach that's throwing it off too. That's my main crit. Otherwise the colors seem to be doing a good job.

The character looks very well made, but I don't know if it reads as post apocalyptic raider. When I first saw this I thought it was a zombie with a base ball hat.

The character does not really have any of the tale tale signs of being post apocalyptic really. His gear is banged up and dirty, but he could also be a motocross guy who painted his face to look like a skull.
I don't want to bring ya down this is a well made character, just the design aspect seems to be the weakest aspect of this piece.

Maybe it could be my assumption of your take on post apocalyptic, when I hear that I think of Mad Max and fall out where people are covered in leather and spikes... but that could just be my take on it.

Thanka for the response fellas, ill do some touch ups and re render this piece.

Manilamerc: Hey mate, thanks for dropping by, ill go check out your thread and see if I can't whip up a paintover for you.

Makkon: Thanks for the observation, my father taught me, "the kidney bean technique" as a child, I wanted to go all the way back to the basics for this piece to really showcase my skill, guess I took the arch to the extreme, ill fix this up and re render.

Dand3d: I was going for a survivalist inspired outfit coupled with the extreme necessity of post apocalyptic lifestyle.

Expect this fella to make a showing in another thread, a member of the new vegas nexus and I are teaming up to turn my apocalypse themed portfolio into a mod for Fallout: New Vegas, so I'll be doing an art dump on that.

    Cheers,
    Payton

The bean, normally used for gestures, is used to show movement and twist in the torso. For a bind-pose that's not always a good idea. Make sure your neutral stance looks relaxed and natural, you can let the rig take care of the bean shape.
