I am very curious on how to make mouths for human characters with teeth and gums ready for animation.I went to school for Game Development and they never touched up on modelling the gums and teeth. What workflow is needed to make mouths ready for animation with gums and teeth? I see a lot of professional work with the mouths sculpted closed.

From how I think I would it would be is to first sculpt the mouth. I would then sculpt the teeth and gums separately

retopo mouth teeth and gums

place gums and teeth in mouth

oh and what about the tongue?

If you guys know anything about the workflow for mouths let me know.

The way I've seen it done (and done myself) is to use a "mouth bag", with the teeth and tongue sitting inside there as you'd expect.

One way to do this would be to alter your basemesh to have the mouth bag and teeth/tongue, and work on them as separate polygroups or subtools.

If you don't have a basemesh you can do this with, sculpt the mouth/lips as usual (somewhat open would make the easiest transition), then add the mouth bag, teeth and tongue after retopo. You can then work on the mouth hipoly to get the detail in there.
