I just wanted to give a quick shoutout to everyone.

I've sent out an email to Sketchfab to see if they support 1-bit alphas as a number of folks have requested it and, after review, I don't think it will hurt the tone of the contest at all to allow them.

I will update this thread once I know for sure.

It may just end up being that we allow you to use the Opacity slot in Sketchfab, and you supply a black OR white transparency (re: no grey) and you turn of bilinear filtering to give it that look.

Apologies to anyone who this affects either way. I hope to have an answer for you in the next few hours.

UPDATE.

You can use transparencies.

Here's how to use transparencies for VG Remix on Sketchfab:
  1. Create an opacity map/mask. Only use the colour white. Do not use any values of grey or black. (Don't worry about aliased edging, that is fine for VG Remix).
  2. Remove the background from your image so only the white mask is on a layer. No background (No black.)
  3. Save this to a .PNG file.
  4. Use this .PNG file as the opacity map/mask in Sketchfab's material editor.
