I just wanted to give a quick shoutout to everyone.
I've sent out an email to Sketchfab to see if they support 1-bit alphas as a number of folks have requested it and, after review, I don't think it will hurt the tone of the contest at all to allow them.
I will update this thread once I know for sure.
It may just end up being that we allow you to use the Opacity slot in Sketchfab, and you supply a black OR white transparency (re: no grey) and you turn of bilinear filtering to give it that look.
Apologies to anyone who this affects either way. I hope to have an answer for you in the next few hours.

UPDATE.
You can use transparencies.

Here's how to use transparencies for VG Remix on Sketchfab:
- Create an opacity map/mask. Only use the colour white. Do not use any values of grey or black. (Don't worry about aliased edging, that is fine for VG Remix).
- Remove the background from your image so only the white mask is on a layer. No background (No black.)
- Save this to a .PNG file.
- Use this .PNG file as the opacity map/mask in Sketchfab's material editor.
