Metal diffuse looking quality for the blade, nice one on that
You need a specular
Also are you sure the grip-metal should be of another kind ? I dont think a blacksmith would do that for no reason. Is it like that on your reference ?
Im not so sure with the grip itself, is that supposed to be rope ? Leather ? I can not really identify it and thats never good
I did have a specular but it is a bit lost on the pics now that you mention it, I will see if I can make it pop a bit more.
The metal is different on some of the reference pics I've found but others its the same, I chose the one with the difference just to make it a bit more interesting . I suppose if ones a cheaper metal than the other that would explain the blacksmith choosing to use 2 metals.
I will also spend some more time on that grip and try to define it better.
Ah, problem here is typical realism vs credibility debate
It looks odd in reallife. Even if you get yours perfectly similar it will not really look believable unless you put the reference aside.
sometimes you need to ignore realism and focus on credibility. Try choosing subjects which are very clear and leave no questions. I guess its pretty fine if you dont want to remodel something from another type of handle. You got it pretty well from the reference.
Focus on presentation now id say
Grey backgrounds are never nice. Get a very light circular gradient which is a bunch darker, with the lightest point in the middle. Lightly toned is best (complementary to your main color or just your main color again), grey always makes things look fake since it dosnt really exist in real life. Also maybe a better light setup so your specular is seen. Like one side of the blade illuminated brightly.
Painteover
Also maybe rething the layout you show your asset
And im not sure if people like triangle wireframes, I myself hate them, the computer does them for you and theres double the info you would need, but Its a engine thing where you render in I know. Looks really nice in the right light
Edit: I was refering to the leather part previously
Modern reproduction blades don't necessarily represent actual weapons. Having said that, there's certainly nothing wrong with sticking with the original concept.
The grip looks to be thin cord in the concept, although it is a bit difficult to tell.
The concept has two distinct types of metal - a porous steel for the hilt and cross guard, and a polished steel with a satin finish for the blade. Also not that there's a hallmark on the blade.
For presentation, a scene close to the concept might work well for you. Of course, that would require a fairly ornate scabbard.
Thanks for the feedback guys - glad you all like the blade texture, that was the main reason I did this sword, I found it a challenge on my first one.
@shrike Thanks for the paintover! That does look better! I will definitely experiment a bit more and see what I can come up with.
What is it that looks less credible to you? Is it the metal on the cross guard and pommel or the material on the grip? I'm not sure which you're referring to.
The wireframes is an interesting point I guess the jury's out on that one I'll ask around and see what people prefer .
@DWalker Yeah I actually found it difficult to find any reproduction blades that look battle worn or were accurate reproductions. Most of them look brand new and so clean its boring (imo), hence the decision to use a porous steel and dirty blade to age it a bit.
I'm tempted to give that scabbard a go at some point just for the fun of it too haha! I've just had a load of work given to me so It will be awhile before I can do some work on this sword again .
Will update this thread when I get chance. :poly121:
