Sonic 3
One of my favorite games as a kid was definitely Sonic 3.
I might grab some characters from other sonic games, but the main focus is Sonic and Tails vs Robotnik in one of his crazy machines. Also, I'll be using sonic's old 'fat' design. Maybe add some details here and there, we'll see.

I could probably cut some detail from the nose. O:
I don't know what I'm going to do with the composition yet, but I had to have the plane.
Started from a sphere. Cutting, pulling and just messing around with it atm.

Silhouette is getting there.
562 tris at the moment.
I think that drill hotrod is one of his coolest vehicles in the series.
Still w.i.p at 492 tris, some shapes need some tweaking and nudging around.

I haven't decided on a layout or scene composition yet. I have some idea's though, so I'll do some sketches for that soon.

I can't help but feel that the plane should be a bit longer. Prolly cuz in the reference the cockpit starts after the wing ends (in side view). The way you have it now would have the top of Tails' head hitting the wing.
Just nitpicking here cuz I can't really find anything wrong with anything :P

Actually looked at it again and saw you've got more than enough space for Tails to fit in there. Ignore me. This is perfect.
This looks awesome
It's a small niggle but it'd be nice if you were to spend a few tris to make a poly around the 'sonic' on the left hand side of the plane so that you could flip the UVs so it read correctly both ways - could take a few tris off the nose like you said to allow for the extra expenditure!
With some clever UV placement coupled with bypassing texture filtering you shouldn't notice any seams either
