So I've started a personal project to improve my sculpting skills. She's going to be a corrupted angel. Atm it's still in the blocking phase but when I'm roughly done blocking i'll make a proper thread for it.
Haven't updated in a while.
Feeling a bit down lately. I don't feel like I'm improving and also I'm a bit overwhelmed whenever I visit one of the cg forums. Also started learning about rendering in uni which i personally find devoid of creative input and more like slider simulator. I know it's not true but..well.alskdhakld...
sorry about this haha, I'm sure it will pass.
The second group of images are studies, the lady is a cos-player called priestess-Shizuka.
Posting my sculpt here because I haven't put much work into it as of late.
Daily study.
I've always had trouble painting skin on my characters and now i know why. I never practiced painting skin ._. Should of pushed the values on this but dang identifying values on skin is hard!
photograph study
Uni work is going to get pretty intense in the next few weeks so i wont be able to paint a lot :<.
Due to the work I don't know if i will be able to finish these which is quite worrying cause I have a problem of not finishing stuff. With that said my 3D character in my previous posts will be finished!... but in the holidays...
My goal for the end of the year is to be able to finish images.
I feel like I need to work on my fundamentals in 2D and balancing learning 2D and 3D has proven to be quite difficult.
Does anyone have tips on scheduling?
The last image is a photograph study.
oh and i have seen these pieces on three different monitors each showing different results...So which one is right i have no idea :S.
Procrastination from writing an essay for my art course :S.
I'm not very happy as I continue my course. It has good tutors and it is a reasonably good place to study...but I'm upset with the lack of fundamentals. We had 1 term of fundamentals last year and that was about it. So now I'm trying to learn the fundamentals by myself but what is stopping me is my art course :I.
Le sigh.
And darn it! My paintings look too stylized i need to tighten up my crap
So I just want to say that I'm sorry for my previous post. I was trying to find excuses for my own feelings of inadequacy. It's quite hard looking at other peoples awesome work and then back at your own.
Thankfully there are more experienced artists out there who have shared similar experiences that have helped me reign myself in a bit.
So! No more excuses!
This was initially for the CGHUB character forge "Forge master" But I lost steam on it and didn't really enjoy my concept.
Some photograph studies from the internet.
And what I'm currently working on, Monster Hunter and Zergssss
It's nice to see 2D stuff mixed in with 3D. I really like your studies (the one with the river and reeds I recognise, I think I did a study of that one myself ) and your painting style has the right balance of raw brush strokes and smoothness.
As for tips on scheduling, I don't know if this will help but - when I wake up (I'm a uni student and work from home mostly) I tend to start the day with 3D stuff. I find it the most intensive as I come from a fine art background and technical stuff doesn't come as naturally to me. Normally around 8/9pm, when I'm starting to get tired, I'll take a break for an hour or so and then come back to do 2D studies until it's bedtime. Then, sometimes, I'll do some pencil sketches in my moleskine in bed. It's a fairly relaxed routine, but I find it helps me to get everything packed in one day.
And thanks for sharing your schedule! Its interesting to see how others work, especially how you handle your 3D because I'm terrible at the technical stuff and I usually put it at the back. I think my "warm up" paintings are just my excuses to avoid it heh. I need to learnnnn.
This is for the blizzard student art contest which sounds really fun.
I'm not eligible to enter but whatever . My concept is a rat catcher.
Still fiddling with his story.
I dunno if he should be a rat who is bent on revenge against humanity, funding his plans by catching rats.
He doesn't kill the rats but trains them? live cage of rats? or maybe rats hidden in his sleeves or clothes?
He was experimented on? give him a mutated human ear?
Or maybe he doesn't care for his brethren?
Should he have a crossbow? but that's like twitch from Lol.
So maybe a flute like the pied piper?
Not read any of your comments...the 2nd piece and all the rest of it...stay alive+keep improving. just by scrolling+flicking through your work...without really looking at for too long...u can tell. I dont ever really comment on peoples work...maybe twice. "random man at computer desk" 2014
1 thing il say in regard to your head sculpts...which ive looked at for a 2nd time...dont under estimate how "ears" can play a big role in the "character" department. The 1st head...the sailor dude...pop eye esc......like that ^^,
Also...least u havent wasted time on detailing ur head sculpts.
Oomph I've been procrastinating like crazy...
I'm ashamed at the lack of progress so my current wip is here instead of my pimping and preview thread. Found that painting my rat is hard and so I jump off and do other things lol. I definitely underestimated how hard it is to hand paint textures...progress is slow.

The girl is from a concept by the fantastic Iain McCaig.
So Uni has started again and i'm back to learning useful stuff like dynamics/rendering.....
But not "useful" useful ( by that i mean stuff I want to learn and work as) stuff like modeling/texturing. So much self learning to do but got no time.
anyway I'm going to halt work on my rat for now because i really need to learn the high poly to low poly process before my uni starts production. I don't want to be put in the rendering team T_T.
current rat:
and blocking out my high poly to low poly project.
I really want to try and push myself with the fine details. Rafael Grassetti i'm coming for you! :P
Try adding some harder edges into your character armor. Some of the pieces just seem very soft like they are made of mud. I love your work though, I hope you post more. Keep it up.
ripper351, hey thanks for the feedback, atm though my character is still in my messy blobby concept phase haha, but yeh i totally agree that once i get my overall shapes down I need to tighten up those edges
Woo haven't uploaded anything in a while, mainly because I have no time to do anything. However that's ok because I get to model at Uni .
Some sketches that I'm painting over, plan to take it to a higher level of polish aaanndd...I'll show some 3D stuff later *cough*/when it's presentable.
Thumbnails for my starcraft monster hunter crossover thing.
This was a different uni short film. I was charged with concepting, modeling and surfacing.
This film was done without the lecturers help so we quickly found out we had to remove all the dangly bits as it was hard to rig haha.
Im also working on a personal project, however I dont feel like posting it. The reason is probably is part stupidity, feedback is always good but also I feel like it helps force me to learn stuff on my own.
And man there has been lots of failure and learning with my current project.
I did this to learn the pipeline with all the different maps (also the topology is rushed). Textures still need work. like alot of work. First time ever normal mapping something, So much fun to spin a low poly with a normal map applied!
I gave up trying to concept an Overwatch character. My design skill are still too weak :<. Need to work on them for sure!. Then after that I tried to make a character for a while but had to scrap it because it was no where near what I wanted. I rushed it too early and so my foundation was wobbly.
So I decided to try again and make a Hanzo from overwatch. Currently at the packing uvs stage, test bakes all done. And then on to texturing!
And a few things I want to work on after I complete Hanzo. These aren't priority so Ive been slowly chipping on these during night/breaks.

@TerryMosier cheers
I couldn't get to sleep and I had no access to a computer so I drew in my neglected sketchbook.
Speed paint from a few days ago
And here are some pages from my previous sketchbook
most of the figure studies and animals are from photo reference.
