Need some UDK help

I am trying to follow this tut. I think because the tut was created three years ago the settings have all changed. While he is creating his level he has a checker pattern surface and I can't find the setting. Does this even make a difference?

That is the default texture that UDK applies.
You don't see it because you are in wireframe mode, switch to lit or unlit view.

That's what I thought. My level is only visible in wire mode though. Everything except the brush disappears in lit mode.

well yes, if you don't have a light on your scene then nothing will show.

Add a light with either ctrl+l (or alt+L, always hard to remember keyboard shortcuts after a while) or go into the content browser -> actor classes -> lights, and add a pointlight, or if you just want the whole thing temporarily lit completely for now a directional light

Thanks for your help. I figured out finally that the reason nothing was showing was that the setting the guy is using is a subtract level. I wasn't given the option so I wasn't actually adding anything.
