3DS MAX: Modelling colour dosent change

hello everyone,

first of all, i am very new to the modelling scene and i am just doing my first model ever.
once it is finished it is meant as a sword for the skelleton king of dota 2.
here is a shot:

so now let me explain the situation.
i started modelling it with a reference image which was set below in a plane.
as the work progressed i somehow copied the plane image onto the actual sword model, but i just made it look like clay (at the top left of the view) and it seemed fine, as it was gone
but now i do have the problem, that i can not change the color of the object anymore. i cant even apply a UVW as it dosent show up in the specifiy views, its only shown as i render the object.

how can i fix this?

regards
Arne

I've run into this a couple of times with several different versions of Max. I usually fix it in this order:

1.) Tools -> UVW Remove - Remove Material -> Reapply UVs

If that doesn't work, move on:

2.) Collapse the object to an editable mesh, remove UVs using the UVW Remove tool. Reapply UVs and the material you wish to work with.

If that doesn't work, move on:

3.) Create a box, center the box at the origin. Convert to editable poly, attach the mesh to the box, delete the box. Reapply UVs and the material you wish to work with.

If that doesn't work, move on:

4.) Close Max, restart it. File -> Merge the mesh into your scene and attempt to work with it again.
