Complicated Gear Animation on Characters. Max.

Do I have a series of gears that I kinda figured out how to move in tandem.. Though its a serious PITA... Anyone know a paid for free script like Gearify? Hell at this point I would use a different program entirely if it has an easy method to make animated gears.

Anyhow, I need to have the gears as a separate animation chain per they can continuously move in sync through.

1. Have them as a separate object that is attached to node on the characters bone layout. I.E. Like hand weapons. However, this could run into synching issues under heavy load where you have 20 characters on screen, and now the gears are a half step behind the character.

2. Making a complicated series of alpha planes and having the gears as rendered normal mapped animations. For each alpha plane. Worried about overhead as well as ruining the moment for players when they see gears from side .

3. Somewhat like 1 but having two separate skeletons along with the gears being a separate object on export. Pretty sure engine using (not saying cause you will laugh) cant support more than one rig per model export. As well as having our programmer yell at me for making him attempt if even possible to have the two animations running interdependently from the other.

Other ideas?
