Maya character rig selecetion

I want to know, how to get hands on the script/plug in or whatever is called, to select rigs on characters. I really have hard time selecting rigs, on characters. When i try to select specific rig, instead of selecting that rig, i select the rig behind it.

I saw couple of guys on youtube or vimeo, that use something,don't know whatever is called, and it's more easy.

not a very clear question, but ill give it a try

organize your mesh, bind skeleton and control rig on separate layers, colour these layers and adjust their visibility and display type.

This way you can control what is visible, whats hidden and whats selectable independently.

If you need a tool for selecting your controllers from a window, instead of from the viewport, there are some scripts that do that, however i havent tried any of those.
