Hey guys,
I am trying to add this section of detail to my revolver.
This is what I have done so far.
The topology just doesn't seem like it is as efficient as it could be. I still have to add some support edges but that creates horrible edges in a few different places.
How would I go about Adding in this detail without removing the smoothness surrounding the detail?

Thanks OBscura, ill give it a go! Any other methods that I can use? Or a change in topology?

Or using a lot more sides on the "base" cylinder.

@Obscura : this is how my first bake went for the floating geometry.. Pretty bad
