Having trouble with a hand

I'm trying to model a hand holding a cigarette but I'm having a lot of trouble getting it to look right.



I'm not worrying about details at the moment, only the general shape of the hand and the fingers and I'm very unhappy with it.

I'm trying to get it somewhat similar to this.



Any help is appreciated.

I'm also curious about the proportions. There is something weird going on with the thumb, index finger and various other parts that I'm not exactly sure how to fix. I think the knuckles are also terrible.

Thanks. I had tried using my hands as reference but I have somewhat different width and proportions than this guy which caused me some difficulties.

As do I, sorry about that,

I think whats throwing it off is cup of the palm, its looking very planar across the pad instead of the cupped shape it would take in that pose, also, the middle knuckles look like they could use to be raised a bit.
