3Ds Max- Tips on modeling this Breast plate

Hi, I;m on the wall about how to model Zero's breast plate. The "bulbs" are posing some difficulties.

Would you model the whole breastplate as one mesh with "bulbs" or Do i model the breastplate separate and model the bulbs as floaters and attach later?

floaters would probably be best. you could start it out as a floater, turn on snaps to vertices and cut around the floater's edge. then weld. that's one possibility though it's probably not the cleanest method.

Sounds like a plan. Is there a Cleaner solution?

Its easy, check some car modelling forums and you ll get a better idea on this. However I would use a circle guide behind the base mesh and use cut tool to have just octagon shape, than a lot of delicate movement of vertices using edge/normal/face movement option in 3D max (edit poly) just so that the base shape dont lose its form.

Or booleans + cleanup (make sure the meshes are 'closed', though)
