I'm currently learning Maya in a college course.
First Project, Make 3 chairs
Project
#2 turn one of those into a rocket chair.
Project
#3 Create a new supersoaker
Project
#4 Make a Rifle design for a video game
here's an unfinished concept i'm working on
So now that the semester is over I would still like to advance my skills. I really want to learn character design. I have no idea where to start though... if anyone has a good tutorial link i'd appreciate it.
Any comments, advice, critiques are always welcome. This is the first time I've ever touched any kind of 3d modeling software so I know it isn't that great. Plus, I'm working with a 5 year old laptop so i usually have to keep the poly count pretty low.

If your looking at getting into character art i'd highly recommend checking out the lowpoly thread - http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41232
Creating lowpoly art is a great way to learn the basics... then once you have that sorted you can move onto more complex characters as its the same principles applied.
The polycount wiki has an amazing amount of information.
Try using this model sheet as refeance and create a male (or female) base mesh, concentrating on learning anatomy.. shape, form & very importantly the topology of the model. Here's a good base mesh referance to model from (taken from the wiki) - http://wiki.polycount.com/CategoryReferenceAnatomy?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=loomis_orthomale.jpg
Oh also have a read through all of this =P - http://wiki.polycount.com/CategoryCharacter
Hope that helps a bit .
