No this has nothing to do with the state of the industry and everything to do with MMO's. This is just how MMO's work. It definitely sucks alot, and is incredibly unfortunate, but this is just the dev cycle of an MMO.
They hire on like CRAZY to take on the huge workload an MMO takes, and then once they launch they have massive layoffs because it takes a smaller team to manage an MMO than it takes to develop one. That and this game was trying to do a tv show/mmo crossover on a new IP. Incredibly risky and didnt seem to payoff.
I know alot of the guys at Trion and they are incredibly talented fellas and I hope they get out of san diego and find work!
"A source suggests that employees are being escorted out of the building and that senior leaders from various Trion teams may not receive severance due to "undelivered services."
Yeah. I love San Diego, but man, sometimes I think it's cursed for game dev studios.
Thanks for the kinds words all. There are a lot of talented people that worked at SD Trion. It's a tough industry, but I'm sure we'll all land on our feet.
I'd love to see some mobile studios rise from the ashes here in the whale's vagina.
I think you're vagina-ing wrong.
But in all seriousness, if anyone knows people that were affected, please let them know that my studio (Avalanche) in New York City is currently hiring: http://avalanchestudios.com/eng/open-positions/
I'm with Dustin, Psyonix is located in downtown San Diego (it's a little expensive, sure) But San Diego is one of the best cities in America. During ComicCon, when every city was having a shitty heatwave, we were stuck at a nice 75 degrees. It bums me out we don't have more companies here..because as Dustin said, We aren't Los Angeles. And let's be honest.. Los Angeles kind of sucks. (also rarely any traffic here). It is nice that Molten is opening up here...
Condolences to all those affected, may you land on your feet swiftly. I really wish we had opening for everyone. =/
ErichWK, San Diego is great, my grandparents lived there for 50 years, I always loved going down there for christmas. Compared to the wet northwest where it gets dark at 4:30pm San Diego was like summer all over again for a week or two. The summers were brutal for a northwest kid, but I always came back with a tan, well sunburn, that carmelized, eventually...
Driving around San Diego a few years ago, it was like driving in any other city, at 3am... ha. I kept wondering when people were going to get out on the roads, where the hell is everyone is there a heat wave warning? Nope just normal traffic, ha.
Yeah, I'm enjoying San Diego so far, tho I need to get out more and explore this town.
We've picked up a few ex Trion folks, and as we staff up in the future, might have more spots for those folks.
Although, I gotta disagree about the traffic. Took me about 1 hour to get home from work yesterday, and I only live 16 miles away...
Well Let me rephrase, There is very predictable traffic in the morning and around 4:30-6:30, but that's only going one direction! (I never hit traffic driving to downtown)
Need I remind everyone..if anyone wants to move to San Diego we have 24/7 Bikini babes and Shirtless dudes. It's siiiick.
But back on topic, I hope Molten picks up more people! I know you guys are hiring up, I think we are still looking for more Programmers.
Man, totally made a thread about that awhile ago, and I was just about to come in here and make a facetious joke about a having a pity party style hangout and I will buy everyone a $1.95 cup of coffee at the local Starbucks.
Polycounts pity/professionalist pitterpatter and poor peoples caffeinated drink-off in San Diego. Thats a long thread title...spread the word, I'll send you a pm.
