I need to know how to make a basic terrain for a game i'm working on.
just earth with some grass, maybe water. But I don't know where to start and I can't find any good tutorial of how to do it
Is there an efficent way to make it?
You might be able to use sculptris for that which is free, if you dont have accces to mudbox or zbrush.
Quick and Dirty Way would be to use something like World Machine or Terragen to produce a terrain heightmap and then use that in 3ds max to generate an according mesh.
free alternative : http://www.guruware.at/main/terraNoise/
But be aware that 3ds max can be very slow, when handling high density meshes. I used meshlab to decimate the meshes first via quadric decimation then loaded the low res model into 3dsmax with baked normalmaps etc.
