Pin constraints on a rigged character

Dear Polycount, I have a simple rigged model that I would like to attach some simple cubes to with pin constraints however Maya wont seem to allow me to do this. I simply got an error when just trying to do a basic attachment so I then sought out an online solution that parented small polygons to the skeleton and used them to connect the pin constraints. This sadly did not work either as when I rotated the joints to adjust the skeleton the polygons and pin constraints that I believed were parented to the skeleton would move in unexpected directions away from the skeleton while. I am not sure how to achieve what I want and would really appreciate your help.
Below I have attached 2 images of what I am working on.

The green sections are objects that I would like to connect to the rigged body. I do not want to simply skin/parent these objects to the skeleton because I want them to appear like they are floating in the gaps of the character as he moves around. I should probably also mention that I am using 2 pin constraints for each green object so that they float between the body sections of the character. Am I approaching this problem the correct way?

Thank you for taking the time to read this post
