Greetings to all for another Mixamo/Polycount contest!

I've chosen to design a cartoonish explorer from the 19th century as seen in pulpy silent films/novels made in the early 20th century. More of what Hollywood thought these guys would look like rather than a historically accurate costume.

I foresee lots of fantastic beards, buckles and mustaches in the coming entries. Good luck to all. Pip pip and cheerio!

Thanks, eCzety. I am definitely going for a cartoon/exaggerated style. Its not my normal method, so the new process is fun. Any suggestions you might have on the stylized caricature would be appreciated.

@Turista, Yeah, the little wrinkles and folds will come. I set goals for myself on each of these contests. This time arounf it's "material properties" and "caricature exaggeration". So those little details will be crucial. I wanna get all the geometry elements in for the costume and props first (still need to UV the straps and buckles, etc). A couple more pouches, and a holster for the flintlock and sextant. My favorite part of sculpting is the small detail, so I usually do that last before baking maps. That way I'm not crushed if i have to make major geometry adjustments. What crits do you have for more detail work?

I do think the exageration is looking great. it seems that "Colonel Westing" and my character could belong to the same world. Great stuff,

My own experience tells me when adding the details, i try to keep it detailed but not too realistic.

eCzety, agreed. Its a fine line between real and hyper-real. I want the costume elements to have material properties (leather vs. canvas, metal vs. wood, skin and hair) But not look exactly 'real'. I think the recent Tin-tin movie almost got it right (not so much tin-tin, but haddock and the thompsons). I was also thinking the same thing about our characters. It seem they'd belong to the same old man society club, where smoking cigars, and pipes, drinking brandy snifters in velvet jackets in front of an expensive fireplace discussing past adventures is the activity. "Good show, I say, jolly good show!"
