Skin Modifier issue

Working on the Infinite Skills 3ds tutorial and trying to teach myself to use max. Running into an issue trying to check the envelopes to make sure the mesh is going to deform the right way. On Sect 7.13 in the series. I've got a bone structure rigged and have controllers set, ect, but when I move the bone structure the mesh doesn't follow.
I'm guessing it's because the skin modifier/bones aren't bound together. This tutorial series is REALLY poor imo because the guy just plows through everything and never says "Oh, btw, here's some common things that could go wrong." I'm new to the program so I have no idea what I might have messed up since I've not done any steps (or missed any steps) that he hasn't done. Ideas?

When I set this up I put the Skin modifier on the mesh, then added all the bones in the parameters panel. The bones are controlled by several controllers that were built previously, do they need to be added as well? I tried adding them but the mesh still doesn't respond when they're moved. It doesn't matter if I select the controllers, or individual bones, there is still no response.

You only need the bones. Not the controllers. Make sure that the editable poly is not in sub-object mode. That's what usually stumbles my students. Simply click the modifier below the Skin if its in subobject mode then go to object level and then go back to skin.

Sorry for the late reply, finally fixed it and moved on, though I think your solution is what did it. My stack was getting all messed up so it wasn't seeing when to add the bones.
