Hey guys,
I wasn't going to post this prematurely until I had all the sculpting done, but I could miss out on valuable feedback!
I've been a huge fan of John Carpenter's "The Thing" since my Dad used to mentally scar me with it when I was a kid.
There was a great prequel made in 2011 but if you haven't seen the movie from 1982 I suggest you do, it's a classic Sc-Fi Horror.
Ignore the mesh interceptions, I'll fix all that stuff before the next update.
I haven't made any detail passes yet so there isn't any clothing, hand or facial details, I'm just looking for more general feedback on his upper half at this stage.
He also has a Colt Trooper MKIII Revolver - That's almost finished and will be in the next update.
(Gun holster will need to be longer for it to fit.)
I've created a livestream so if you want to come and hangout while I work (maybe share some techniques) or just listen to the music feel free.
I'm not sure how often I'll make a live show but I'll leave a recording on the page every time I do in case there are new artists out there that wanna pick up on some stuff.
Maybe I'll bump this whenever I go live or set a certain time aside every day or so.
Hope you guys like it so far; all feedback is welcome.
Cheers!

Genius-
The Chess Wizard and a bottle of J&B would be an awesome pair of props
''Checkmate. Checkmate''
''Cheating B*tch''
Awesome topology on the colt dude. Coming along very nicely.
Lankus: Thanks! I don't model weapons often, it's a nice break from all the sculpting.
Gonna stream some work live tonight if anyone wants to come and hangout with some tunes.
Thanks to the guys who stopped by to say hi during the livestream, was fun having some people to chat to while I work.
If you guys wanna see the video of the whole boot process you can find it on my livestream page in the "MacReady_2" video.
The leather stamps worked out great.
Turista - Thanks mate.
Just a small update:
Added the straps to his hat and around his shoulders.
I decided to use Maya's nCloth instead of modelling/sculpting them because it would be much faster and look a lot more natural and dynamic.
If you haven't used Maya's nCloth and want to know a little, basically I did it in these steps.
1, Created 2 strips of cloth. (poly planes)
2, Gave the planes some thickness, added support loops and then smoothed the mesh. (If your mesh polycount is too low the final result won't look as natural.)
3, Selected the Mesh and created the nCloth.
4, Changed the cloths preset to T-Shirt.
5, Selected 2 vertices at the top of each strap (highlighted red on the image) where I wanted them to be held in place and created an nConstraint.
6, Went into the nucleus attributes and played with the wind settings until I was happy with the direction and speed the straps were blowing in. (highlighted blue)
7, Scrubbed through the timeline until I found my favourite position.
8, Exported the OBJ.
And that's pretty much it.
I hope you guys found that info useful, there's loads of cool things you can do with it.
Hopefully someone finds the info useful.
1.) Use your boot as reference to position your CV Curve.
2.) Build some poly faces of the mesh you want to extrude. For mine I created a cylinder with 6 division and deleted all the faces I didn't need.
3.) Open the Extrude mesh option box, change the curve settings from none to selected and add some divisions; In this case I used 60.
4.) After hitting extrude I could see that the mesh didn't have enough divisions which caused a lot of breaks in the geometry so I deleted it, added another 40 divisions and extruded it again which gave a much smoother result.
5.) When happy with my extruded mesh I manually tweaked the corners to make sure the mesh wasn't collapsing on itself and that it deformed nicely.
6.) I re-position the laces to cross over rather than intersect.
7.) Imported the laces to Zbrush and sculpted around the laces to add a sense of tension.
I'll be using Mari and Vray for the texturing & rendering, but I need to teach myself how to use them first, so that should be...fun.
Hopefully by the end I'll have something that looks close to a cinematic character.
All feedback is welcome.
Cheers!
I look forward to seeing your texture work
Yeah, it's basically a hybrid of bodypaint/zbrush/photoshop.
It's the software they used on Avatar and some cinematic studios like Blur have switched to it lately.
I've been looking into it this week and it looks freaking incredible.
Do you guys know there was a scene in the movie where he had a blow up doll? They removed it from the movie though.
Been trying to learn how to use Vray all day, my brain is full.
Here's the first test render; I think I'm on the right track towards a Cinematic style character. Fingers crossed!
Any feedback would be appreciated! Cheers.
Decided to take a break and sculpt some sexy man beef tonight.
Not really sure about the pockets....I sculpted them onto the jacket but modelled them separately in the retopo'd mesh.
I guess it's fine for my own use, but wondering how that would go down in production; I definitely see the benefits with building a solid base mesh to keep throughout the pipeline.
Had to pull an all nighter to finish some freelance work (On a Sunday! How much does that suck??)
Nonetheless, I found some time for a little fun.
10am and I haven't done anything but screw around with this all night. haha
Ok....enough procrastinating.
Started some texturing earlier tonight, but nothing special; I've just thrown down some base colours for now.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around using Vray and it's shaders for the first time, so hopefully I'll polish them to where I want them by the time I'm done.
There are a few artifacts in the normal map and some things I'm going to go back and change in the high poly sculpt, buuuut it's progress.
Great stuff - anatomy looks awesome
