Hello guys!
I created my Polycount profile today and just wanted to start by asking a question in regards to duplicating edges along polygon faces in Maya. In Modo, the slide edge tool also has a duplication feature which allows users to duplicate the selected edge(s) and slide them along the face(s) that they're connected to.
Of course, inserting edge loops or splitting the polygon seems like a good enough substitute, but what makes this feature so desirable is the amount of time it can save when doing this to many edges at once. Edge loops won't always be a possibility and polysplitting would be time consuming and imprecise.
I'm certain that's all a little vague so below I have linked the video where I saw the tool being used.
Anyway, if such a thing isn't possible within Maya, could you please explain any other techniques that might give a similar result? If not, it's completely fine, I'm sure I'll find something.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks for taking a look.

also using the partial edge ring select in maya helps, select where you want the ring to start than select where you want the ring to end, hold control+rmb, and drag down to "Edge Ring utilities", and either "to edge ring" or "to edge ring and split" Than maya will do a partial edge ring selection.
In the future i might try and create such a tool with the maya api, but taht would be far in the future since i got about 5 projects on the go.

you can also set the number of divisions when you insert an edge loop, slide, numerical input values etc.
just make sure you have the channel box open so you can click on nodes and edit all the properties.
I WISH!
That's a plug-in, so maybe there could be a Maya plug-in too? That's such a great idea though.
I gave the offset edge loop tool a try, but I didn't modify any of the tool settings, but it makes sense that I'll find what I'm looking for there. I'll also try turning auto complete off.
The divide edge tool is really cool, I could imagine it being quite useful in hardsurface modelling.
I was wondering if there was an equivalent for edges in Maya since I ran into a situation where I manually connected two edge loops and needed to duplicate that single loop rather than repeat the process multiple times. Offset edge loops worked. I was hoping for just one that I could drag and place where I wanted but it generated two edge loops. Not sure what it was doing there, but it worked out.
Since this post is so old, I wonder if a more elegant solution exists now.
Insert edge loop with multi cut tool
