Hey guys,
it's been 2.5+ years since I started using UDK, learning it, prototyping, producing, going big and back to small again. It's been my work in my spare time, including programming, 3d modelling, texturing, animation, level creation, UI and menu work, sound recording and editing, music creation, maintaining my blog, etc.
Finally I've finished the intro for my game, Elium - Prison Escape.

This trailer has been captured from an in-game level, all done in matinee, because this is also the same cutscene that will be in the game when it starts.
Of course all this time hasn't been spent only in this trailer, but also in the game itself, which is in beta stage.

Anyway, without further mumbling here it is:

make sure you watch in HD.

so what's next? well I need to work on some armor for the guards and make some level props to work on more rooms of the prison, and with that I'll take some screenshots and I'll try to get it up on Steam Greenlight. after that, time and the response it gets will determine how much this might become an opportunity to go for full-blown development or if I keep at it as a hobby, but I'm focused to finish it either way.

also since this is the same level that the game is played on, any critique will influence the game's cutscene and actual gameplay level (even if I don't re-record it as video)
I hope you like it :)

Hey nice work - looking pretty good. Visually a bit monotone though, perhaps adding a yellow/orange flickering torchlight to add a little colour might help. Some other light sources such as pale volumetric moonlight streaming through a window would also be a welcome touch - depends what you're aiming for though.

Also totally unrelated to the actual content, but I briefly thought the guy had some sort of horrifically deformed genitals when he first stood up in first-person: I'd weight the tassels to his legs personally!

Anyway looking forward to more art etc, good luck with greenlight! :)

wow, is that... a reply? :)

thanks for your comment. it is indeed a little bit monotone, but in fact the whole room is mostly dark gray and the brown colors come from the light (which is already yellow and flickering!). other than that there's a very subtle Skylight that I'm using as ambient, but since the game has a stealth factor and I like pitch-black zones in my game, I made it very very subtle. I don't know, I don't like to have fake colors when they're not meant to be even if they added an artistic touch.

as for a window, I agree a volumetric light would be a nice touch. however this is meant to be an underground prison and I like to keep the sense of having a deep confined place as opposed to a prison with views to the outside world.

anyway I just finished an updated version of the video, which now shows up in the original post. as part of the fixes/updates, I modified the belt so that the hanging parts don't fall down through the middle as you're not the only person that pointed it looking like his genitals :)

here's an update: little by little I finally finished the guard's armor (which in the video had regular clothes but was barely noticeable).

all of these armor parts are modular and are actually different items in-game that can be equipped and unequipped (if you manage to kill a guard and loot him!)

here's a screengrab capture (3-point light setup), and how it looks in-game (where the gray stuff like the belt and boots get to be colored, and the armor is 2-sided).

I'm also thinking of doing a plate-less version of the gloves (moar in-game items!)
