ESCAPE - Venus Escape

So this is my first time creating a model in 3D where the use of mapping is being applied. I had some basic knowledge of UV mapping prior to this but my experience with it was rudimentary at best. I'm excited to get into the polycount community not only for moral support, but constructive criticisms and guidance to help make me a better designer as a whole. I look forward to seeing other peoples imagination come to life and sharing my own as I continue with my career. I hope you enjoy my posts!

The first is from the perspective of a fly escaping a venus fly trap. I have been working on it for a few weeks now and learning a massive amount thanks to my school Professor and his seeming infinite patience with us as his students.

Ok! So I apologize for not posting images correctly before, as I was learning how to use polycount. Thought I haven't been able to post my work as I went, I do have all the images of my work. I will post them separately so that you can see what was done at different times. . Hope you enjoy!

First, my mood-sheet. Though I've already posted it, it's hard to see it so I'm starting there now that I know how to get the images posted.

My blockout for the scene.

Since the main character in my scene is the fly, I started creating that first. It is still a version of a block out for the fly but it gave me something to work on.

At this point, I realized that the fly didn't look completely like a fly so it turned into a hybrid of one. . This made me start thinking about different types of textures that I would add to it since I didn't want a complete fly texture now for the lack of it actually looking like a fly. It did turn the project into something a bit more fun however. Here are some images of my fly smoothed out a bit more.

Next up, the high poly version of my fly. This was my first attempt at Mudbox, and I had a really good time using it. I look forward to continuing with the software.

After learning quite a bit about the different maps that need to be created and having to rework the re-topology multiple times, I finally was able to come out with a low poly finished up fly. My high poly ended at around 1.5 million triangles, and my low poly came out to be about 23 thousand. As my first attempt, I was pretty happy about the outcome. Hope you like it!

Now off to other assets in my scene. The fly trap was next. Here is the little more detailed block out of my fly trap.

Here it is! My final scene shots. I had a great time with this project, learned a massive amount about preparing ahead of time for future tasks that need to be done in modeling. Thanks a lot to my Professor for taking the time and having the patience to explain the various processes that make up 3D modeling.
