Hello fellow polycount dwellers!
We are here to make art, but we are also here to make a game
When the escape project was first announced we were talking about joining this awesome contest but sadly we knew we couldn't because all our time went into making portfolio pieces or school projects. But now when time has passed and our team has started to produce some quality stuff to their portfolio. Joel said during lunchbreak
"well, why can't we just use our game for the escape contest?"
Which was possibly the most brilliant thing I heard this week.
What is Cave Escape?
This is a game made in UDK which is about a spaceship who wants to escape a dangerous cave he has mistakable teleported in. The player must retrieve several crystals to activate a warpgate to warp himself back home. When exploring this cave the player may encounter gravity defying anomalies, hot lavaballs, violent giant eartworms and other mysterious spaceythings
Here some concepts about environment and variations we plan to make
This game is a exploring game inspired by games like
solar jetman.
Who are we?
We are a late jolly bunch of game developers that are all over into this project.
We are a five man team that attend a game developing school in Sweden (Playground squad).
Billy Sköld - Designer/programmering

Our school has given us a deadline for us to work against which is 19th May. We are aware that the escape challenge ends at 12 May which is something we aim to be finished by then with the game so it will be as polished as the 19th may version
This is how we have been doing for two weeks ago: (sorry for the bad quailty, I will try to fix that to the next video)

Some honest information
We have never made a game in UDK but played around importing meshes and simple stuff, we have had lots of struggle while working with udk (especially Joel and Billy). We are a development team with experience with 3D modelling and game design. Usally our school have an inhouse engine called Tengine which our other classmates use, but our professors gave us the opportunity to challenge ourself and make a game in UDK, which we did!
----FIRST WEEKS
We have had lots of problem with collision, one of them being that we can't rotate the collision mesh which forced us to make the player a cylinder which can't move but everything around him moves (there have been a lot of collision problems)
Here is a pretty picture of our problem before
But we solved it by making a ship that barely rotates and have other equipment rotating around such as flashlight and engines
We have been through a lot of struggle but right now I
think its going good. We still have more than half of the time to both deadlines.
Here are some art we have been doing the last few weeks
Here is a few rocks and then we tried some few shaders to make them crystals (all very WIP)
And this some screenshots from WIP from today
gameplay will be uploaded soon!

Update on the game
Only critique I can give is to say the the metal and rocks need blending together so they are a part of the world rather than just placed inside the blockout.
Keep it up!
We are going to take a look on the metal parts and try to make them so they feel like they fit into the same world.
Heres some new rocks!
(The background texture for most of the level)
(heres a screenshot of the world in the game, I made an angular shot on purpose so I don't show all of it, but now you guys know approximately how big it is )

A explorer game made in UDK.
Wow, we have had some real issues trying to get out the game but finally. Here it is!; Here is our work in progress thread
Work in progress thread
Thats was the only thing I could write up before the we approached deadline, (one minute before they closed)
We have had extreme crunch time the last few hours ( I apologize in advance for misspellings and grammar, I am so tired but I just have to get this out). We did our best to get the best pictures but our primary focus was to get out a playable game and had some struggle with UDK. But in the last half hour we got it working.

WASD for moving
notes:
- When you find the booster upgrade you press shift to use it
- When you find the map upgrade press Q to toggle full map and mini map
- The rest should be explained through the gameplay or is automated
Have fun! We tried our best to give the most atmospheric and interesting gameplay! (we recommend playing with a friend to solve the mysteries the world awaits)
