When selecting vertex mode in a object it is showing too many vertices in 3ds max. I mean, from the back of the object. Those points are not isolated vertex by the way.
It's probably a graphics driver issue. Depending on what video card you have you might want to update it's drivers, or switch max to another display mode.
Newer max versions default to the Nitrous display driver which doesn't run so well on older cards. Switching back to Direct3D works best on the older hardware, you do that by going to the Main Menu > Customize > Preferences > Viewports tab > Choose Driver. Then restart max.

I noticed some problems with the almost invisible thickness of the seams in UV mapping that were fixed also changing the display driver.
