Landscape Mode and Caves??

Hey everyone,
Im working on a environment that needs a cave, when I started I used the Landscape mode because well thats what everyones told me to use, and I do agree it is much more versatile. However now that I have got the landscape just the way i want it, I needed to make a hole for a cave. Normally in the terrain editor this was not a problem for me, and i could easily decrease/increase tessellation and then cut out what i needed. But now with the help of some tutorial, im finding that the only way to cut a hole into a landscape mesh is with the component tool, which bites off waaaay to much. I also read alot about the same issues here in the forums, but they are outdated, and I was hoping that someone would know of any new changes that would either allow me to change the size of each component tile, or to cut into the mesh a different way? Or if anyone else has had this problems, what methods did you use to work around this?
