About

Black Lotus Empire
is a shooter that allows the player free movement around the screen as the camera is moved along a pre-determined path. Players assume the role of Sparrow, a girl miraculously born with wings in the toxic Chinese countryside. She can fight on the ground or in the sky and utilize a diverse mix of evasive maneuvers, melee and ranged attacks, and unique special attacks. The world of Black Lotus Empire is packed with enemies ranging from swarms of low and mid-level enemies to over-the-top bosses. In battling these, players must use their mix of offensive and defensive skills to conquer their foes, earn upgrades, and determine the fate of China.

Goals

Short term

To create a playable demo on ios which represents about half the scope of a typical level . We will then use this to take to Kickstarter to raise a small amount of money which will cover the cost of licensing the Unity Engine and outsourcing any aspects of the game which we can't recruit for, such as effects, ui, voice acting, music, etc.

Outcome 1: Funding successful. Yay! We celebrate and move forward with the game as planned.

Outcome 2: Funding unsuccessful. Moneyhorse pays out of pocket for licenses, and we don't outsource anything, so maybe we end up with a little less polish on the music, voice acting, etc.

Outcome 3: Funding goal exceeded. We pump anything over our goal into polishing the game or adding content.

Long term

To release BLE for mobile platforms and get good reviews and decent sales. All team members will enjoy profit sharing. Sales model is still unknown at this time. Whether it is a one-time charge or freemium remains to be seen. Hopefully the team will have enjoyed working together so much that we move on to another project together.

Positions

In order to complete a great demo, and then a great game, we are recruiting. Please note that everyone working on the game is also working a full time job. We are looking for somewhere between 10-15 hours of commitment on a good week and as low as 0 hours on a week where you are crunching or otherwise busy. What we want to avoid is having people who sign on and then only contribute infrequently. Below are a list of open positions. Please send links to online portfolios, resumes, or other appropriate information to jobs@moneyhorsegames.com

Lead Environment Artist- We are looking for a talented artist who can interpret concept art of varying levels of polish in an efficient way. I don't expect all the concepts to be as tight as the ones featured here, so having the ability to interpret concepts is a big plus. Environments will be very modular. The plan is to have geo and textures be as optimal as possible, and focus the budget on light maps. The ideal candidate will have additional skills or interests which they will want to try out on the project (effects, level design, etc).

Lead Animator- In my opinion, animation is one of the worst parts of many otherwise great mobile games. As a character artist it breaks my heart to say this, but animation is far more important to the character than the model/texture. We are looking for someone who can bring a strong style to both organic and mechanical characters. Max or Maya, doesn't matter. Ability to rig characters is a big plus.

Tech Artist -Experience with Unity a big plus. The tech artist will facilitate the link between art and programming, helping to set up pipelines, track down bugs, make changes to Unity where needed for the game, and pitch in with art creation if desired. Familiarity or desire to learn about Unity shaders would be another plus.

Concept Artist - We are looking for a concept artist with an emphasis on environments. We need someone who can make both mood art, and clean model sheets for the artists to work from. The ideal candidate has a good eye for silhouette, color and shape, and puts less emphasis on details.
If you don't see a position listed that suits your skills, but you still want to make contact, feel free.
