Hi folks

I am rigging a character for UDK and yesterday having 3/4 of the rig done I realized I messed up and it wont work,so learning twice and redoing it.

So maya skin weights question. Can I transfer skin weights from my old model/rig to new? I exported them onto uv maps, no vertices have changed, just bone names and placements and I get this error when trying to import a weight map onto a specific part of the body that's been skinned.

// Error: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2013/scripts/others/importSkinMap.mel line 70: File must be an exported weight map text file, i.e. "fileName.weightMap" //

thanks
Zygi

its been a while since i looked so i may be off here. but i think the weight maps correspond to your joint names. so if you renamed the joints its not going to transfer. the source and the target names have to match.

you could also try skin->edit smooth skin->copy skin weight

that will copy from one mesh to another based on lots of different criteria. read the docs for all the options.

Ah thanks for advice gray, I eventually skinned from scratch as I improved the hierarchy and it wasnt the same. And had no problems mirroring the difficult parts this time :)

This is the finished rig UDK ready. Not much beauty in a posed, grey guy without textures, still waiting for them from character artist.
