Hello all,
I've got a character model made for a game project, but I'm having a huge amount of trouble rigging the model to bones. :S
I make the characters skeleton, and try and rig bones with the vertex selection with the weight tool, problem is, I don't understand how to use it, I've looked through loads of tutorials and it works fine for them, but when I try and do it, it just doesn't do anything! :S
What I do:
-Click model
-add a skin modifier
-Add ALL my bones
-Select bone that I want to edit envelopes on (the list with all the added bones)
-Click, ''Edit Envelopes''
-Check ''Vertices'' under select
-I select all the vertices that I want to weigh on to the bone I selected from list.
-Click on the weight tool
-Enter 1.0 in the box next to ''set weight''
NOTE: I don't know why or understand, that when I click on the head bone, in the weight tool one of the arm bone appears in the list? Don't understand :S
-Click Set weight.
-now when I move that bone the part it should be weighted to, just doesn't move, but the bone does :S
What am I doing wrong? (probably a lot.)

So for example you want to skin your right leg, and select the lower bone and set all vertices near to it to 1 with your work flow, then there's still the bone in it with weight 0. You need to remove those, or the skin will be confused and sometimes not work correctly, stretching some parts with the other bone still linked, although it's 0. So click on "remove zero weights" either on the weight table or on the modifier list (there's some option you'll see when you expand it via the + button)

It works great on any bones in 3dsmax. Check the site for the youtube tutorial URL. I can't live without this script!
