Hello! My general idea for this contest is to design a nuclear power plant in meltdown. The facility, I have decided, is going to be an older string of buildings, clad with outdated equipment which in my mind is the overall source of Reactor No. 3's overheating from an unresponsive SCRAM button. That is also where the name of my level came from, as the SCRAM button in a nuclear reactor facility is the emergency shutdown button. I am going to be using UDK to design my level and Maya will be used for a majority of my static meshes. I am still extremely new to UDK and very inexperienced with using it, but I really hope to push my limits and make something truly spectacular in the next few weeks. Concept art and WIP screenshots will be coming soon!

I am not too amazing at drawing, but here are some starting ideas I have for the level! I'm getting a better feel for what the level will look like and also the colors and textures I'll be using. I have blocked out the first 4 rooms of my level in UDK and I will be uploading a few screenshots when I have finished the last 3 rooms. In the meantime, I will be working on more concept art.
This is going to be one of my main rooms of focus. This is reactor room No. 3, the 'main' nuclear reactor in the plant. The finished production of this room will feature a broken floor along with a glimpse down inside the malfunctioning reactor. Hopefully lava corium flows can be added at the base of the reactor floor once the break has been fully modeled and textured. This will be a great chance for some neat particle and material effects, especially with glowing materials and 'lava' flows. The lighting here is only temporary.
This is my second room of focus, the power generator room for reactor No. 3. This room will also consist of a broken floor allowing a view into lower levels of the generating power side of the plant. Many of the spatial objects in this room will be large static meshes, namely generators and steam pipes/vents. This will be a nice room for some nifty smoke/steam effects and will provide a nicely different perspective of this half of the level. The lighting here is also temporary.
Working on the reactor room!
Pipe's a nice touch, roof girders add height to the room and the wall damage works well with the scene, looking forward to developments on those! I also really like the hole in the floor idea, adding all the mesh coming out from the sides of the hole is a great touch.
Depending on how many people are working on this I would say to concentrate on the rooms you now have and make them look awesome rather than have a load of half done rooms, you can always block some doors with rubble to give an impression of size...
I look forward to some developments whatever you decide!
Just playing around with some lighting.
Working on the second room.
Adding some extra detail to the second room.
The final video! Screenshots for submission will be uploaded to the final submission page. Make sure to select 1080p & fullscreen!
