Is this too damaged?

It's the base of a lamp post I'm modeling for my street level. I'm working on my sculpting, and one thing I remember being said by someone is newbies tend to overwork their projects. Just wondering if mine could be scaled back?

The top shape seems like I could tone the damage down. I'm going for an abandoned, destructive remnants sort of environment so you know what I was thinking during this. Thanks for any suggestions!

I don't think that a damaged rock or any damaged thing have some sort of level of damaging, I mean you could make it as much as you want.

I think that you need a lot more large damage shapes on the sides because there is a ton of high detail noise.

Sounds good! I was thinking of digging the concrete further in to the point that you'd see the light pole going through. Adding some layer to cracks to make them have more depth as well.

I'm not sure if you need more damage at least. Keeping in mind that it might look a bit repetitive if there's some very distinquisable damage on it. Like all the lamp poles would have a chipped bottom.

Doesn't really look like how concrete would get damaged. Poured concrete stains easily and fractures/crumbles. It doesn't usually break of in thin sheets like that.

That said no one is gonna look at this and go "PFFF thats not how concrete weathers!" so I kinda wouldn't worry too much. As long as you aren't applying damage to every edge of your model and at the same consistency it should look fine.

This is kinda unrelated but I would sculpt with a matcap that doesn't have such a tight specular

I disagree.. Not every detail has to be in the normal map. You can get plenty of shapes out of your diffuse simply with color varriation and it will look more natural in the end.

I know it'd be extra overhead for the engine, but I was thinking of having 2 separate types of lamp posts. One with this kind of damage, another with minor damage. That way the distinguishable concrete bases are at least separated by another base.

Yeah Atticus I was thinking that the whole time like is this realistic or does it look like someone went crazy with alpha brushes ha
