I am new to modeling and have a question.
When I import an .obj into 3DS Max, it will either be triangulated or faceted.
1. Faceting issue:
Applying a smoothing group doesn't get rid of the faceted look
2. Triangulation issue:
Must I remove many edges to get the model back to quads?

Generally speaking, you don't want to triangulate a model that wasn't.
Now, the model shouldn't be "faceted" when you apply a smoothing group.
What are your obj import options ?
Maybe all faces have been exploded at export ?
Select a face and move it to see if all faces are detached. You can perform a weld with a very low treshold on vertices to fix this.
