This is a UDK environment I've been working on for my portfolio show this week. I'll be graduating with a B.S. in Game Art & Design from The Art Institute of California San Francisco. Please tell me what you guys like or would change on both my portfolio website and this environment. Thanks!
This environment was created using a modular building set combined with some texture modularity for optimal render efficiency while keeping texture resolution at a maximum. Please note that several of the terrain materials went unused because of the limitations of the Unreal engine. I could only get five working at a time, but that turned out to be fine for this level. The metal modular material I made turned out to be particularly useful and is used on most of the meshes. Thanks to Duylinh Nguyen for his excellent instruction on my first UDK project!
Hey, looking pretty good. I really like your building prefabs. I love me some organized assets! As far as critique, the one thing that stands out to me right away is the contrast of your renders. For an outdoors scene, you really want to try and avoid going to black. Although you do have an overcast skybox, your shadows wouldnt quite go to blue. And along those lines, in some of your shots, your value range is really low, not a lot of high values. What I like to do is bring my screen shot into photoshop, create a levels layer, hit auto, and turn its mode to luminosity. Right away it should show you a few areas of improvement.
As well, I would say to really explore with the terrain. You can push the background mountains, and id also add some fog into the scene. And right now your buildings dont really blend realistically into the world.
Your asset creation is really nice, but I believe this scene needs just a bit more love. All the art is right there, its looking pretty cool.
Thanks very much for the critique saphr. Sorry to respond so late. Graduation and GDC have kept me busy. I got similar responses from the art leads I got critiques from at GDC. The lighting needs love and the buildings need more small props and foliage around them so they don't just look plopped down. The mountains are grey and so is the sky and the silo, etc. I'll be able to put some more time into it soon I hope.
if anything about the foliage, throw some grass around the houses, make it look lived though. my main problem, is the textures on the tractor seem relatively low quality in comparison to your buildings.
