I recently got the opportunity to delve into games like Mass Effect 3, Saints Row the Third and Max Payne 3. These games have characters with poly counts that seem very high. How many polygons are most of today's games running per character?
From 10 to 80k usually. Depends on the budget. Also the number will be higher for next generation, i expect nothing less than 50-150 in couple of years.

Incredible! When I look at some of these 3rd person character models it's obvious that the count is really high.
can I figure how many tri's I have before exporting to a game engine? I use Max, which counts quads only I thought.
By default it only shows quads, but you can change that. In your viewport right click on the little plus sign in he upper left corner, and go to Configure, then go to the Statistics tab...and check Triangle Count.
Don't forget that important characters often have much higher counts than minor ones because they're usually closer to the camera and the viewer spends more time looking at them. Averaging the poly counts of a main and minor character should give you a good middle ground for current gen.

30k tris seems to be the high end average for 3rd person video game characters.
