Vertex Painting or Terrain Landscape for this?

I plan to create the circled areas as separate from the main floor, but I'm wondering if I should use UDK's terrain landscape tool or its vertex painting feature (On a Static Mesh) for the flat floor. Maybe it's possible to create the flat floor AND the circled areas with one terrain? My concern is getting everything to blend together well.

I would use mesh, will give you greater control and quality. I would generate the asphalt UVs in Unreal, Planar Z, so they seamlessly run over into the sand mesh placed on top. Vertex paint the sand mesh to make the asphalt fade out/in around its edges, and make sure the vertex normals of the pile of sand point up around its edges. That will give you a 100% seamless transition.

Terrains are fairly heavy, plus too "grid like".

Sounds good. Unfortunately, I only have experience with terrain painting. Thanks for the seamless transition tip! That will be huge for blending the textures together. My goal now is to learn vertex painting and see why it gives greater control and quality :).

Btw, great tutorials! I've seen some of them before.
