I have been modeling my character with a low-poly mesh and want the renders to be the smoothed version (when you press 3 on the keyboard). Is there a way to do this without changing the mesh to a smooth version? (smooth it only for renders)
Also I can't find any shaders that let you apply maps for fur/hair. I used to use 3DS Max and the material editor was a lot easier for me to use. I would like to apply fur to my mesh and use greyscale textures to control the density/length/etc and can't find any shaders that do this. Also of course I only want the fur displayed at render time.

check the attributes of your shape node, SmoothMesh->DubdivisionLevels, uncheck use preview for rendering
for the hair stuff, you should read mayas help concerning hair and fur
