Looks cool man, I actually started a Venomthrope a while back Personally I think the purple could be desaturated a bit as right now its very bright 'pinky' and colorful and kinda takes away from the malevolence of the Tyranids. Maybe in the final texture the red areas between the 'ribs' could be more prominent and would be cool to see the skin quite slimy, so I would say incorporate that into the spec/gloss map. Can't wait to see the low poly!
Yeah man this looks great! Just to repeat what Torch said I think darken it a bit to make it look more menacing, and then add some gribblyness with lots of greasy slime! He needs to look more slimy.
Re-looking at it I definitely agree. I'll bring the saturation levels down in the final texture.
The skin being slimy? I assumed the outside was supposed to be bone xD I'll play around with that and gribberlyness and see what I can come up with, thanks guys!
Good thing i read the entire post before posting. Good sculpt, very accurate to the source. I was supposed to comment about the shaders used. Will be intresting how the carapace will look with specular and normal. To be thats an intresting excercise in material definition.
nice, really nailed that warhammer feel, it could be 3d printed and used in the game ^^
Only minor thing is that it seems a bit unclear what the white actually is, seems like it is stuck between skin and bone.
Finally got the time to low poly and bake the textures. (free times low at the moment, newborn, lack of sleep and that kind of life stuff.)
Any who this is a shot in marmoset with basic setup and the spec turned on to help show the normal map (hence funky carapace lighting). Currently hasn't got a spec map, will work on that once I finish colour adjustments and tweaks.
@joeriv: Yeah at first I thought it was bone so figured it would look quite weathered and brownish since it was exposed. After reading up some more of their lore it turns out they aren't evolved enough to handle their psych powers and can rupture their brains. Combine that with the flesh between the carapace being exposed I'm going to go with the earlier suggestion of slimy feel over bone.
Always gotta love those organic zerg/alien themed creatures. I'm not much of a character or creature artist so I really have nothing more to say other than I like it.
Looks really cool but I think the texture could still be pushed further. Right now it reads as an actual miniature, but not a real life creature. I think working on the spec more and the lighting will help the most here. The brain part for example could look slimy and wet. The bone should look hard and dry (get some references and add detail). The shell parts could also have some subtle details you see in sea shells for example or beetles. Anyway, defining these more in the textures and materials will go a long way, its very close keep going!
Found some more time and have started seeing where I can push this.
After reading what BradMyers wrote, I figured I'd play with making the carapace look similar to a beetles and see how that looked.
I desaturated and brought the brightness down on the carapace sections on my diffuse and then increased the saturation on the specular in an attempt to match that high colour reflectiveness that these beetle carapaces have.
I've not touched the bone section yet as I've just started again, I've got some references and going to attempt that and the brain next.
This was the result I've got so far, comments appreciated:

@Torch did you ever finish the Venomthrope?
Subscribing.

Looking foward to the end result ^^

Any suggestions always welcomed.
