Copying keyframes in Maya 2012?

I am having more trouble than I should be with copying key frames in Maya. I am trying to animate an idle on one of my characters, and I am trying to copy keys to create moving holds. But I can't seem to copy and past correctly.
I'll copy a frame and then I'll paste it at a different point in the timeline, and it will make a keyframe, but it will not copy the position or orientation of my controller. So it really doesn't copy the frame at all.
I've tried copy/pasting in the graph editor and in the timeline, and neither have worked.
I'm more familiar with animating in 3Ds Max, so it is very possible that I am just over-looking something.
Any suggestions?
I am using Maya 2012.
