Layered Shaders? help

I have been looking at some tuts on youtube for Layered Shaders and they're kind of so so.
I wondering if anyone knew of some really good links for learning how to use layered shaders.

can you be more specific, specific offline renderer (mentalray...) or real-time (do you want to write the code yourself)?
