Updated the ol' blog with a terrain workflow post which includes an image sequence of the area as it developed toward final product. The terrain was done in Unreal and outlines how I painted and sculpted said ground. Check it out, and as always, if you have any questions, let me know:

Could you talk more about the material setup for this? This was done in UE3 right? Was it Landscape or Terrain? It looks like your material is using HeightBlend to keep the transitions sharp. Did you have a limit for how many layers you used in a given area?
